  5.     He called it a Christmas pilgrimage to the Holy Land. But
  6. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has never allowed his religious calling
  7. to prevent him from actively engaging in politics in South
  8. Africa, his home, and he behaved no differently abroad. To the
  9. studied discomfort of the Israeli government, which maintains
  10. close ties to Pretoria, Tutu used his visit to the Jewish state
  11. to air some outspokenly pro-Palestinian views.

  13.     He voiced support for "the struggle of the Palestinians to
  14. have a Palestinian state," implicitly backing the two-year-old
  15. intifadeh. He spoke of "worrisome parallels" between conditions
  16. in the Israeli-occupied territories and South Africa's black
  17. townships. And he outraged Jewish sensibilities by urging
  18. Israelis to forgive those responsible for the Holocaust. Most
  19. Israeli officials declined to meet with Tutu, accusing him of
  20. harboring anti-Jewish prejudices. Protestors scrawled "black
  21. Nazi pig" on the wall of the church where Tutu was staying.
